Product Description

Title: Neither Here Nor There: A Lifelong Journey of elc’s Founder from Scotland to Malaysia

Author: Margaret Ann Kaloo and Umasuthan Kaloo

Publisher: Gerakbudaya Enterprise

ISBN: 978-967-0076-47-8

This is the story of Margaret Ann, founder of the elc International School in Malaysia. She was born in Scotland at the end of WWII, and at the age of 21 after graduating with an MA from Aberdeen University, her wanderlust took her to Malaysia. It was in Malaysia that she found her two enduring loves. One was a career choice to be a teacher, and the other was for a man of a different race, religion, and skin colour. At different times, her two enduring loves were faced with severe obstacles.

In the early years, they arose from differences in ethnicity, and she was cut off by family and community. In the later years after a very successful marriage, it had to do with her teaching career. The first 15 years of teaching in two schools and one university were happy years. Then, changes in the education system introduced by self-seeking political leaders made it impossible for Margaret to continue teaching in the public sector.

She quit and founded her own private school only to be beset with punitive regulatory and enforcement obstacles aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises owned by the non-privileged. It took her more than 30 years to build an outstanding school in elc with the unstinting help of family, friends, and colleagues. Her joys and struggles are related here in this uniquely Malaysian story.
