These pages contain my childhood recollections of Malaya, observations and musings on my time in legal practice and some thoughts on events in the new millennium. These reminiscences also include several brushes with history, events which shaped Malaysia and set me on my path through life,from my call to the Malayan Bar and the founding of my firm, Chooi & Company and its continuing evolution. While no historian, I hope to capture a sense of the forces that touch our lives and link us together. In some of these events including the BMF scandal, I played a role, and in others, I bore witness. Some had put me, as well as my family and my firm, through trying times. At such times, I had to ask myself, “What is the right thing to do?” This is the thread which runs through this book – doing the right thing not just for myself but for my family, my firm, my colleagues and my country.
